Two healthy green trees were felled by Vasant Vihar Society for being "too tall" on 3rd March 2010. Distressed residents of Vasant Vihar called up our tree helpline and our volunteers rushed there. Alas, they were too late and the trees had been axed. Examination of the permission letter showed that the permission was given because they had termites and were too tall!

Members did a dharna in front of the office and raised slogans against tree felling. We also met the Chairman of the Society, JP Nawani, a retired bureaucrat, who tried to pass the buck by saying he had merely forwarded the application and the final approval came from the DFO.

While we were sitting there, local residents informed us of illegal felling of roadside trees by Bhawani Balika School a few days ago. The school had got permission to fell one tree inside the school campus but had decided to fell 5 more on roadside, without "thinking about it" as the Principal claimed. Forest officals were called at the site and have agreed to take action against the school.
