CFGD has been agitating against the Government of Uttarakhand's proposal to double lane the Thano - Raipur Road. This is one of the most beautiful area of Dehradun and the road is in excellent condition. Initial plans of double laning involved the felling of 11,000 trees but it was shot down by the forest department last year. A revised plan of felling 3500 trees was then put forth by the PWD and the forest department agreed and forwarded it to the Ministry of Environment in Delhi for approval. At present the proposal was pending there.

In the process we had met the Chief Secretary last week and handed him ove a detailed letter giving reasons why the road should not be widened. Apparently the PWD had two meetings on the letter, the last one being yesterday.

We met the PWD Secretary, Mr. Utpal Kumar Singh today to press our case. He was very patient with us and informed us that the department had decided to withdraw the proposal and now will only realign the existing road for 4 kms only which will entail felling of roughtly 150 trees. He promised to transplant as many of them as possible.

One problem solved :-)
