A delegation of CFGD met the Agriculture Minister of Uttarakhand, Mr. Trivender Singh Rawat. Mr. Rawat has been in the fore front of a sustained Anti Plastic Campaign in Dehradun and has been an active environmentalist for a number of years. As a first part of our efforts to reduce the plastic menace we requested the government to remove the taxes on "Chinese Cloth Bags" and to make available these along with cloth and jute bags at all Governement Retail outlets, including Anchal Dairy Outlets. Read our memorandum here "Chinese Cloth Bags" are made from a synthetic, biodegradable cloth which is cheap, attractive, with an average life of 2yrs and are reusable. They are being used extensively in Delhi & Himachal Pradesh and because they can be folded into really small size and are strong, they are widely reused and not thrown into garbage. If the taxes on them are removed then their prices would be comparable to that of plastic carrybags and hence motivating street vendors to use them would be easier. Mr. Rawat assured us of his effort of removing the taxes on the cloth. |
