Quit India Day is on 9th Aug and was used by Gandhiji to declare war on the British. It was decided by all people involved in saving Ganga, that this day would be observed as "Quit Uttarakhand Day"; a way of telling companies involved in making hydro electric dams in Uttarakhand to quit Uttarakhand and return our rivers back to us, just as they were.

We were fortunate enough to be joined in this noble cause by People's Science Institute and Latika Roy Foundation. Slogans against the tunneling of Ganga into mountains were raised. Inspite of Monsoon rains, over 50 people participated in the dharna, which was held in front of Gandhi Park, in Dehra Dun.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Nitin Pandey said that the river which has for centuries has quenched the thirst of so many people is now itself in danger of becoming extinct due to excessive dam building. He said that if all the approximately 736 dams proposed by the State Government are made, there will be no river left except in Rishikesh & Haridwar. He said that putting Ganga into dark long tunnels was a criminal act and to generate power the Government should go in for solar and wind energy.

Himanshu Arora, a member of CFGD said that it is not correct to change the name of Uttarakhand, which is known as Dev Bhoomi, to Urja Pradesh. If name has to be changed, it should be changed to Parayatan Pradesh. He said that building dams on the river destroys the heritage of Uttarakhand, leads to displacement of thousands of people and is detrimental to wild life in the jungles around the river and to the dense marine life in the river, as well. He said that building dams cause colossal environmental damage and will ultimately lead to the disappearance of Ganga.
