Citizens For Green Doon today launched a Mass Contact Campaign to sensitize the shopkeepers of Dehradun against using plastic bags of any thickness. Under the slogan of “Our dream – a plastic pollution free Doon” members of the group gathered at the Clock Tower on Sunday evening and in small groups of 4-5 visited the shops in New Market. Volunteers could be seen explaining to the shopkeepers the need not to give free plastic bags to customers but insist on customers getting their own bags or selling cloth bags to them. Students of Doon International School & Doon School participated in the drive. They were seen contacting the people walking on the roads with plastic bags and exchanging it a cloth bag.
Speaking to volunteers of the group, Dr Nitin Pandey said that leaving everything to the government will not work and citizens of Dehradun must take it upon themselves to get their city free from the menace of plastic pollution. He said that plastic bags of all sizes are equally bad as they end up in drains or in stomach of animals or are burnt releasing toxins and cancer causing agents in the air. Mrs Laksha Mehta a member of CFGD pointed out that it is the mentality of people which needs to be changed. She said that before plastic bags became freely available a few years ago, people had a habit of carrying a cloth bag with them whenever they went shopping. This habit needs to be re-inculcated in them.
Present in the rally were Himanshu Arora, Venu Dhingra, Sonia Pandey, Ruchi Singh Rao, Shubhendra Singh, Ankit Sajwan, Smrity Lal, Priya Maheshwari, Jaya Singh & Harminder Singh.
