CFGD formally launched its Anti Plastic Campaign on 26th March 2010 in a press conference.
While we acknowledge that the Plastic menace is a big problem, our aim to take small simple steps, starting from the easiest first. Broadly speaking, our Anti Plastic policy involves four different thrusts.
Retail Shopkeepers & Street VendorsWe believe that if the all too familiar sight of plastic bags or "pannis" lying in drains, roadsides and floating along, is to be banished, the retail shopkeepers & the theli walas need to be tackled. They should be motivated not to use pannis. For this we would be educating as many as we can, requesting them to use cloth/ paper/ chinese cloth bags in place of pannis. We urge everyone not to give these bags free, because things which are free are never appreciated, but make the customer pay for it. Chinese Cloth bags are relatively cheap, costing around Rs 1.50, so it should not be a problem. We intend to make these bags available for sale at paan shops soon.To motivate shop keepers and street vendors who (1) do not use plastic bags & (2) have a proper waste disposal set up and don't throw it in the nali across the road, we intend to give "Green Certificates". These certificates will be 4*3 feet tin boards, with our logo and "Green Shop" written on it, plus a line urging people to shop in these shops to save the environment. This will serve as a motivation tool and hopefully bring in more customers. Schools & School ChildrenWe would soon be contacting all the schools in the city and requesting them to declare themselves "Plastic Free Zones". Also, we are working on the idea to see if it would be possible for children to bring to school all the plastic bags at home, we will collect it and give it for recycling and award the child who gets the maximum.AdministrationWe would try and pressurize the administration to impliment the plastic ban less than 20microns in Dehradun. The Uttarakhand Government has plans to ban all varieties of plastic bags, we are waiting for that. Once it becomes a reality, we would help the government to monitor it.PublicProbably the most important segment. Needs convincing. We would, during our rallies, try and take plastic bags we find people carrying and put their stuff in a paper / cloth bag. We need donors for cloth bags for such events. Please let us know if you could help us arrange free cloth bags. Our MembersShould practise what we preach, so all our members are requested not to accept or give plastic carry bags anywhere. This will set an example for others to follow. When someone refuses a plastic carry bag in a store, the message reaches other shoppers there, even if it remains in the subconscious. One day, hopefully, if they hear it repeatedly, it will make a difference. We would also be approaching caterers to request them to avoid using plastic cups and use glass cups instead.
This is in brief, our plan. If you have any suggestions or would like to be a part of this movement, please tell us.
